From The USA to Iraq to Bethesda Naval Hospital Baskets for Our Heroes
My family received a request from a good friend. The friend is serving our Country in the United States Marine Corps. At the time, the Lt. Colonel was stationed in Iraq, and was in charge of a large group of our Marines. His request? For my family to visit his Marines recovering in Bethesda Naval Hospital. To report back to him how they are doing. To let them know that he is thinking of them. Our friend is a true Marine. A wonderful Marine. On my first visit I met Don. He had just celebrated his 22nd birthday. A tall athletic Marine, his left leg was gone above the knee and they were still trying to save the other leg. Another was waiting to have his stomach reattached to his colon so he could begin to eat and drink again. A Navy Corpsman whose entire leg was gone asked my husband to find out what happened. His mother wanted to know and he had been knocked unconscious. An email from the Colonel explained that they had been hit by 3 road side bombs. Although the Corpsman´s leg was mutilated, he continued to give aid to those around him. The stories are endless. Marines and their families camped out at the hospital for months. Healing and for most, looking forward to getting back to their fellow Marines so far away in Iraq. Then I decided that we needed to show these brave Marines and their families that we are thinking of them and most of all how thankful we are for them. With very limited food services, we initiated "Baskets for our Heroes". Fresh baked goods to give them a little taste of home. Our deliveries were HUGE hit with the Marines and their families. Pumpkin bread, brownies, candies, and cookies of all kinds plus a new DVD library with money donated from local friends and businesses. What a Success!
